Invasive clams like it hot: heated water from power plants gives populations a boost

The River Shannon is Ireland’s largest river, with a storied biological and cultural history. The River drains 20% of the country, running through the centre of the midlands while providing a source of power and water. The machinery used to generate power in most power plants, whether they’re nuclear, peat-fueled, or coal-powered plants, often heats up to extreme temperatures when the plants are running. To try to keep the machinery cool, many power plants today take water from local sources, use it to cool the generators, and then put it back out into the original source. Two of Ireland’s largest power plants, the Lough Ree Power Station and the West Offaly Power Station, use water from the River Shannon in this way, putting the water back into the river up to 10°C hotter than the River water. The warm water can change the structure of the aquatic community near the output, and our study shows that this increase in temperature gives a significant boost to the invasive Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea.

Can you dig it? Parasites influence the rates of bioturbation in lakes and rivers.

The impact of parasites can often reach beyond their individual hosts, shaping populations and communities in their ecosystems. Parasites often control the behaviour of their hosts, leading to their role as “ecosystem engineers,” changing the ways in which the hosts physically shape their environments.

In lakes and rivers, gammarid amphipods, small shrimp-like crustaceans, are known to act as ecosystem engineers by digging into the sand, in a process called bioturbation. Bioturbation is a major process in the ecosystem, as this digging alters the concentration of oxygen in the sand, the concentration of nutrients in the water, and the biological communities living in and on the sand. We wanted to know whether the amphipods would dig into the sand more or less when infected with behaviour-changing parasites, like Polymorphus minutus, and whether the temperature of the ecosystem influenced the rate of digging.

Undergrad Thesis Collection 2019

Every year, the Trinity College Dublin Zoology, Botany, and Environmental Science moderatorship students (final year undergraduates) complete their own research projects related to their course. It has been my absolute privilege to spend time with these talented students and to watch their projects take shape. I am blown away by the dedication they show, the incredible topics they cover, and the way in which they approach their investigations. After their theses are submitted, the students hold a poster session where they present their work. From beetles to beer and back again, this year’s students have done impressive and solid work. I hope all our readers enjoy learning about these projects as much as I did! FAMELAB: Like American Idol, but for Science Communication

As many of you know, the TCD parasitology group is well known for parasitic proselytism. Having tried a few other science communication challenges (PubHD, BioTweeps), I was looking for a new opportunity when I stumbled upon FameLab. This wonderful joint venture of the British Council and over 20 Irish partner institutions actually trains the next generation of science communicators. The competition/talent search is free to enter and is extremely easy to join at Trinity, which hosts its own heat. It seemed like an exciting new way to spread the parasite gospel, so I signed up and worked on a three-minute talk using only props that I could carry on stage. My first talk, on the Carter Center’s program for the eradication of Guinea worm, was exciting to write and prepare.

From the moment I walked into the TCD heat, I was excited. The other speakers were enthusiastic and talked about everything from lasers to dinosaurs (unfortunately no lasers on dinosaurs). I focused on the current efforts to eradicate Guinea worm. Steeling my nerves, I went on stage, spoke about my topic, carried a giant stick, and was selected as the winner of the heat. The thesis collection 2018

One of the best parts of my PhD in the Zoology Department at TCD has been working with undergraduate students. The strength, creativity, and dedication of the students shines brightest in their fourth-year theses. Like many programmes, TCD requires final year students to plan, conduct, analyse and report a novel piece of science- whether it’s an experiment, field study or meta-analysis. How to start a Ph.D (or how to try, at least)

There are a lot of how-tos on the internet (Thanks Buzzfeed!). You can life-hack yourself into an efficient machine, but before my first day at TCD I couldn’t seem to find a good article to put my nerves at ease. Once you’ve applied and been accepted to grad school it seems like it should all be a bit relaxed, but the night before I started I was a bundle of nerves. There are a few articles that are helpful, like this one from Next Scientist, but most articles I found are pretty vague. Everything’s Better Down Where It’s Wetter: Benthic Ecology Meeting 2015

Conference attendance can really impact your development as a Ph.D. student and give you great ideas for future collaboration and research. In March, I was lucky enough to attend the 2015 Benthic Ecology Meeting (or Benthics) in Quebec City, Canada.  The Benthics meeting focuses on the ecology of the bottom layer of water systems, and this conference is mainly marine in focus. There were lots of great talks, one epic toboggan race, and nearly unlimited opportunities for networking and discussion. A quick overview of my three favourite talks is below. New Year, New Understanding of DNA

It’s the time of year for New Year’s resolutions and improving oneself. As a scientist, there are always about a million things to do to become a better researcher, but this year my resolution, and the one I hope all our readers adopt, is to become a better science communicator. Whether this means tweeting better links or publishing more frequently, the role of communication in science can’t be overstated. You don’t have to be a researcher to engage in scientific communication either, and it can be as simple as mentioning something you read or heard to a friend or family member.
